The airport was built in the year 1330 as the airport of Mashhad. In 1966, a concrete runway and an air defense base were also used, each day using a DC3 flight at Tehran-Mashhad and educational and aeronautical flights, in addition to military flights.
The airport is the second largest airport in Iran after Mehrabad International Airport and above the international airport of Imam Khomeini. The number of daily inbound and outbound flights is ranked first in Iran.
